Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is regarded as the world’s leading achievement award for young people.

Its balanced programme of activities in the areas of volunteering, skills development, physical activity and expedition develops young people physically, mentally, socially and emotionally in an environment of social interaction and team working. It also encourages young people to live life to the full.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award offers the following benefits to students:

  • Self-belief
  • Self-confidence
  • A sense of identity
  • Independence of thought and action
  • Respect and understanding of people from different backgrounds, cultures and walks of life
  • A sense of responsibility

We offer the opportunity for young people to undertake their Bronze or Silver Award. The award is achieved over a minimum period of six months and includes each of the following areas:

  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests
  • Expedition: planning, training for and completion  of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad

The aim of the expedition is to inspire young people to develop initiative and a sense of adventure and discovery, by planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey as part of a team. Students will receive guidance and support from trained staff.

Young people wishing to find out more about the Duke of Edinburgh Award at Astley should speak to Mrs Pawsey.
